Arne Jacobsen was one of the most influential architects and designers of the twentieth century. His iconic furniture designs have become enduring classics both within and outside Denmark’s borders, but his creativity reached far beyond these well-known works. This book charts Jacobsen’s innovative career and the major role he played in developing the mid-century Nordic aesthetic. Placing him in the midst of the European post-war avant-garde art scene, it sheds new light on the rich variety of Jacobsen’s work – from sleek chairs and light fixtures to elegant textile patterns and watercolour drawings. Hundreds of never-before-seen private photographs of Jacobsen and his many designs also feature throughout, revealing little-known aspects of his fascinating life and work.

Résumé:
Not many designers are as well organized as Ed Annink and so apt to leave things to chance at the same time. He arranges combinations of constraints and designs products and exhibitions from there onwards. As a design teacher he handles the same principle. His focus is to let students experience and develop their personal design process. Ed Annink distinguishes himself by the width of his scope. He designs on the run as it were and the objects he creates seem to be of minor importance among the ideas and activities that surround them. Some products take less than a minute to come alive. He can be sketching ideas about material qualities, production, use and image without having a particular functionality in mind and seeks to minimize effort for everyone involved, the producer, the person who makes the product, the one who sells it and the user too. As a teacher he may be maximizing the effort his students must make in order for them to discover what it means to be a designer. This monography, written by Ida van Zijl, Gert Staal, Schwartz and Ed van Hinte (ed.) and including interviews with, among others, commissioners from VITRA and Authentics, describes and analyses Annink's work as an exhibition and product designer, an educator and a project initiator.

Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, "E-1027" (completed 1929) and "Tempe a Pailla" (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.

Résumé:
Arriving in the United States in 1914, Viennese-born Paul T. Frankl (1886-1958) brought with him an outsider's fresh perspective and an enthusiasm for forging a uniquely American design aesthetic. In the years between the two world wars he, more than any other designer, helped shape the distinctive look of American modernism. This authoritative book draws on an extensive collection of unpublished documents and family papers and photographs to provide the first full account of Frankl's life and ideas. The book also explores the history of modern American design and the extent of Frankl's influence on its trajectory. In the early 1920s, Frankl opened a New York City shop that became an epicentre of American modernism. Over the next decades, his work encompassed everything from individual pieces of furniture and decorative accessories to entire interiors, and his style continuously evolved, from early 'Skyscraper' furniture to relaxed and casual designs favoured by the Hollywood elite in the 1930s to manufactured pieces for the mass market in the 1950s. The book charts the impact of Frankl's ideas on merchants and consumers, on his fellow designers, and on the changing look of American homes and workplaces. With close to 170 illustrations, "Paul T. Frankl and Modern American Design" is an essential reference on 20th-century design.
