Scope and Content

This sub-series documents James Stirling's collected artwork and photographic materials. Material in this sub-series was produced between the 1950s and 1990. The sub-series contains drawings, including student artwork by Stirling, and several portraits and caricatures of Stirling, as well as slides, photographs and negatives taken by Stirling of architectural subject matters. It also includes Stirling's personal records, including those relating to his military service in the Second World War and its relation to his university education. This material consists of correspondence and a certificate dated between 1948 and 1951. Some personal notebooks are also included.

Reference Number

AP140.S1.SS2

Arrangement

The material in this sub-series is not arranged in any specific order. This subseries was previously divided in two other subseries (AP140.S1.SS2.D1 Artworks (1955-1990) and AP140.S1.SS2.D2 Photographic Material (195?-197?). Because of the rather small amount of materials within each, it was decided to merge them togerther and have the records directly arranged under subseries AP140.S1.SS2 to facilitate research in the finding aid. The numbering of each file included in these previous subseries was not changed and still represents the old structure. Some additional material with new numbering has been added since.

Related units of description

  • Several of the same views found in this sub-series, but consisting mostly of more recent photographic prints, probably for publication purposes, can also be found in the Photographic Materials sub-series of the Professional Papers series (AP140.S2.SS7).
