Tending to the Riverscape

CCA elsewhere, in French and English, Jardins de Métis/Reford Gardens, 3 July 2024, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Join the second cohort of the River, Shore, Land project as part of our Master’s Students Program as they explore the effects of erosion on the landscape and shorelines surrounding the Jardins de Métis on the Mitis and St. Lawrence Rivers.

The name for the Mitis River likely comes from the Mi’gmaq words for “poplar” and “river” (mitispu). Poplar trees are a powerful tool against erosion, with their deep and wide root networks. Through exploring archaeological, ecological and social histories of the site, we uncover the many relationships (and roots) it has been entangled in through time.

As we explore the changing currents of the rivers and their banks, we invite you to enter into a relationship with these rivers as well. Weather permitting, we will host a guided tour of the point where the two rivers meet between 5.30-6.30pm. From 6.30-7.30pm, we will host a reception in the Great Hall at the Jardins to uncover more of their history as we share in food and conversation and present our initial findings. In case of rain, we will host an exploration and reception event in the Great Hall from 5.30-7.30pm.
