Building Protagonists: Modernist Senegalese Architecture and Its Material Articulations

Event, in French, Hôtel Saint-Louis Sun, 9 November 2024, 10am to 2pm

The CCA c/o Dakar program organizes its third public event during the Dakar Biennale. Focusing on the designs of four members of the first generation of Senegalese architects, the CCA c/o Dakar curator Nzinga B. Mboup revisits these buildings and interviews their architects to understand their approaches, methodologies, material choices, and styles. The aim is to begin defining the different expressions of modernism in Senegal by questioning the intentions of their authors directly, but also by placing them in a wider context of ideological and material production.

The CCA has been collaborating with curator and architect Nzinga B. Mboup, co-founder of Worofila, to produce a series of public events and research projects in Dakar. In May 2024, the c/o Dakar program brought together four architects from the École d’architecture et d’Urbanisme de Dakar (1973-1991) and two professors to reflect on their training, as well as their aspirations and conceptions of Senegalese and African modernities. In August 2024, the second event invited four Senegalese architects to share their research and achievements in the field of heritage preservation.

The CCA c/o Dakar program is a means of activating the formulation and dissemination of knowledge in order to prepare the ground for the collective appropriation of new building forms and practices that respond to contemporary concerns and the evolution of Senegalese and African society and culture.

This event is free and open to the public. To reserve your place, please RSVP by writing to rsvp@cca.qc.ca, before 8 November, 17h (EST).
