The Ben Ezra Synagogue in probably best known in the West as the synagogue in which the Cairo Geniza was found—a rich store of ancient books, manuscripts, miscellaneous correspondence, business records, and other scraps dating back to the tenth century. This book describes the restoration of this ancient synagogue, which was built within the walls of the Roman Fortress of Babylon, as well as the historical and archaeological research essential to its preservation and to an understanding of the interrelationship of the religious communities which founded modern Cairo.
