Groundwork with Noelia Monteiro

Talk, in English, Paul-Desmarais Theatre, 8 May 2025, 6pm

Join us on 8 May at 6pm for a lecture by Noelia Monteiro on her work at Estudio Flume. The studio, based in São Paulo, develops socio-environmental projects in remote areas of Brazil, aiming to protect traditional communities that preserve the Amazon rainforest. Monteiro’s work poses a key question: in the face of resource scarcity, how can we build with almost nothing? Solutions can be as simple as creating a shadow to define space. Exploring coverage as an initial protective measure, she will present case studies and research on new construction materials. In each case, the focus is on the learning process before and during construction, highlighting the spatialization of community needs and the sustainable use of resources.

This discussion is part of the public events related to our Groundwork project, exploring the evolving role of architects today.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Noelia Monteiro is a founding partner of Estudio Flume. Her professional practice and academic research focus on the development of architectural design and urban social and environmental systems in rural areas. Her studio is based in São Paulo, with projects spanning various biomes in Brazil. She is actively involved in academic and teaching fields, research studies, and lectures, having spoken at institutions such as MIT, the Order of Architects of Turin, and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble, among others. Last year, she was selected for the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture, which recognizes architects under 45 who are leading their own practices. This year, Estudio Flume won the Simon Prize, curated by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona. She is currently a coordinator and professor at Escola da Cidade in São Paulo and is conducting her PhD research at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
