Christine Mehring, CCA Visiting Scholar and Associate Professor of Art History at The University of Chicago, gives an overview of her book project concerning the interrelationships between abstraction, decoration, and design in the 20th century centred around five case studies. The seminar focuses on the most contemporary case: Liam Gillick’s working through the minimalist legacies of art and design by incorporating information supply, corporate design, and utilitarian suggestions into his discussion island platforms and screens.
She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 20th century art, contemporary art, art theory and criticism. Her current areas of interest include abstraction, art and design, postwar Western Europe, German art, relations between new and traditional media. Since 2007, Christine is also an Associate Professor of art history and the college in Architectural Studies within Art History at The University of Chicago.
Christine Mehring was a Visiting Scholar at the CCA in 2008.
