Visiting Scholar Sandra Buckley presents her research.

“The Architecture of Mobility: Remapping the Tokyo Urbanscape”, will explore the historical emergence and contemporary impact of new mobile technologies of communication on the conceptualizaton and performance of spaces of movement across the Tokyo urbanscape. The architecture of mobility will be treated as a field of transformative technologies extending from the body itself to buildings, commuter spaces, and 3G communication tools. Such relations as machinic to organic, human to non-human, built to non-built, connected to unconnected and disconnected, inside to outside, private to public, work to non-work will be re-examined in the fluid, dynamic and often unstable processes of Tokyo’s unfolding architecture of mobility.

Sandra Buckley received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the Department of East Asian Language and Literatures at Yale University. She is the former Director of the Center for Arts and Humanities at the University of Albany (SUNY) and is currently an Adjunct professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at McGill University in Montreal. She has published the books Encyclopedia of Contemporary Japanese Culture (2002), and Broken Silence: Voices of Japanese Feminism (1997), along with several other text contributions regarding contemporary Japanese culture.
