Our winters are becoming more and more unpredictable. A snowstorm one day may turn to rain later in the week. Between the two, ice and slush invade the streets and sidewalks, making it hard to move around. And this cycle happens again and again. We see cars trapped under mountains of snow and the disappearance of parking spots. Buses run late, and the subway floors are flooded with water from passengers’ boots and sometimes, more worryingly, from the roof. When it’s icy, sidewalks become so slippery that some people are afraid to go outside.

Since children might imagine solutions that adults can’t think of, we need their help. In this workshop, we’ll imagine and develop new ways of moving through the city during the winter, while considering the multiple experiences of different citizens (drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and especially the elderly, people with disabilities, or small children, for example).

How can we design cities that are better suited to transportation in the winter? Can we use the context of winter to make mobility more fun and efficient? Instead of being a problem, what if these seasonal changes are an opportunity to change our habits?

Families will build models and record videos addressed to the City of Montréal to explain their designs. For children aged 7 to 12, accompanied by an adult.
