What methods do architects use to gain a better understanding of the site they are working on? Before even thinking about building, you need to have a deep understanding of the local environment and context which will influence your design. An architect must be a keen observer —studying the textures, sights, sounds, smells, habits, people, activities, and circulation of a site.

Learning from the practice of DnA and architect Xu Tiantian, participants are invited to discover how various local materials from across the coastal ecosystem of Meizhou Island, are sourced, studied, and implemented into an architectural project. From bamboo to mangroves to oyster shells, this workshop is an invitation to explore how materials with diverse characteristics can lend themselves to unique designs inspired by the local context.

The program includes:

• An interactive sensory visit of the exhibition Into the Island and tactile field study of materials and objects on display

• A discussion on how architects represent landscapes in plans and drawings

• A presentation on the qualities and construction potential of various materials

• A workshop experimenting with the properties of living materials

Learning objectives

• Social studies: Learning how lifestyles and architecture are influenced by surrounding cultures and environments

• Science: Conducting field research to observe and understand an environment

• Arts: Hands-on material manipulation and craft
