Description:

- Judging by their size and shape, the two empty compartments in the tray probably contained a medium and a large ruling pen.
- Instruments in the tray were listed starting at the u.l. and working clockwise, following a keyed diagram in the object file.

Physical characteristics and technical requirements:

- This set of instruments includes 22 metal and ivory instruments, a wooden french curve, two plastic set of instruments squares, and a wood, plastic and metal slide rule. Sixteen small objects (including horn centres and nibs) sit in a compartment within a green velvet-lined tray containing the metal and ivory instruments. The french curve fits in a pocket in the green silk-lined lid. The case is covered with a dark wood veneer, cracked in some places, and has metal inlay, hinges and a lock. Key to the case is missing.

Inscription:

inscribed - on french curve, by an unknown hand, in graphite, throughout: with letters and "LEG" inscribed - on graphite point for compass, engraved in metal: "CH. LAMOTTE / BREVETÉ" inscribed - on proportional compass, engraved in metal, throughout: with numbers; and t.: "Cercles" and "Lignes" inscribed - on drawing end of swiss pattern beam compass, engraved in metal: "CH. LAMOT[TE] / BREVETE [sic]" imprinted - on both set squares, in black ink: with company name and instrument model imprinted - on slide rule, in black, blue, and red ink: with measurements, maker, patent numbers, and "MADE IN JAPAN"; and on verso: with tables of equivalents
