Physical characteristics and technical requirements:

- Contemporary binding consists of brown cloth-covered boards and maroon leather spine, label and corners. The cover has gold gilt inscriptions and accents and can be held hinged closed with a brass metal lock. Endleaves are of white silk moiré. Pages are of light yellowish white cardboard and have gold gilding on edges. The album is comprised of 88 photographs and 6 panoramas. An order form for photographs by J. Burke of the "Afghan War 1878-79" accompanies the album.

Inscription:

imprinted - in typscript and gold gilt, on a maroon label attached to the cover, c.: "AFGHAN WAR 1878-79 / PESHAWUR VALLEY FIELD FORCE / J. BURKE." inscribed, dated and signed - by [T. ?] Reader ?, in pen and black ink, on the front flyleaf, u.r.: "Alice [Elmhirst ?] / [1880 ?] / From [T ?] Reader"
