inscribed - c.: "Four wide stone steps lead from the Forum / to the Basilica. Rising from these are four / columns. The capitals are Pompeian Ionic, / their volutes embellished with palmettes / curling back to the abacus. In plan the / Basilica is a columnar nave surrounded / by an aisle. There are twelve Corinthian / columns on each long side of the nave, / and an engaged Ionic order along the walls / that flank the aisle. At the far end of the / nave is a raised tribunal with six Corinthian / columns. In this ruined and deserted place / the solitary figure of a woman stands, / shrounded in a voluminous cape over a / wide crinoline skirt, her face hidden in / the shadow of a broad brimmed hat."
