inscribed - c.: "Before him a wide flight of stone steps / leads to the Basilica, a space flanked by / broken colonnades and enclosed by ruined / walls. Here a woman stands, framed and / diminished by the columns around her. / She is shrouded in a cape and crinoline / skirt, and her face is hidden in the shadow / of a broad brimmed hat. In his letter to / Cornelius Tacitus, Pliny the Younger said / that the eruption of Vesuvius produced a / cloud that resembled a pine tree. Before / her a fallen section of Basilica wall frames / the Gulf of Naples and the umbrella foliage / of a Stone Pine. If she were to look beyond / where he stands she would see the distant / slopes of Vesuvius."
