- Contemporary binding consists of maroon leather-covered boards and black leather-covered spine and corners. There are gold gilt inscriptions on the cover and spine. Endleaves are of yellow paper. A bookplate present on the front pastedown bears the name "R.J. Ashton". Pages are of light brownish white paper. The book is comprised of a frontispiece, title page, dedication to Queen Victoria, preface, table of contents, list of illustrations, 11 chapters, one appendix, 20 photographs and two maps.
