The plan of Chicago is the unquestioned masterpiece of Daniel Burnham, who at the time of its completion was riding the crest of an immense reputation as one of the leading architects and certainly the leading city planner of the nation. He launched almost singlehandedly the "city beautiful movement," which was to dominate American city planning well into the twenties.
