Summary:

Professor Giedion, well known as an historian of architecture, is concerned in this latest work with a problem that in his view has come more and more into the foreground: the dual concepts of constancy and change in many spheres, ranging from the creative to the philosophical. These Lectures, originally entitled "Constancy and Change in Early Art and Architecture," have taken ultimate form as two interrelated but independent volumes. This second volume deals with the art and architecture of the first high civilizations, Egypt and Sumer. These early builders expressed an attitude of immense force when they confronted their structures with open sky, and it is Professor Giedion's thesis that during this period the problem of constancy and change flared up with an intensity unknown in any other period in history, and resolved eventually into the first architectural space conception, the automatic, psychic recording of visual environment.-Amazon.
