Summary:

The Albertina is on of the greatest collections of master drawings in the world. The choice of the examples in this volume encompasses the time from 1400 to 1800. In making the selection, quality was the first consideration, then the representative character of a drawing within the collection. Thus, the art lover - and hopefully the reader - will find not only the celebrated names of those artists who are the subjects of the innumerable art publications flooding the market today, but also the names of those artists who, though less familiar, nevertheless created works of high quality. Consideration was given not only to the interests of the layman but also to those of the expert, who will find many an unpublished sheet along with everything requisite for its scholarly discussion in the commentary and bibliographical notes, the latter necessarily in restricted form.
