Summary:

In view of the different economies and state of technology in the United States, there would seem to be little similarity between aided self-help in developing countries and the form it takes in the United States. Squatter settlements, which have the most potential for the use of aided self-help techniques, do not exist in the United States. Urban living in the United States is not conducive to aided self-help except for "urban homestead" programs and do-it-your-self home improvements. Building codes, union restrictions, insurance requirements, recreational diversions and the presence of a government-assisted home construction industry militate against noncontractor-built housing in the urban centers. However, aided self-help can offer real possibilities for the American Indian and migrant populations.
