Summary:

This book is consciously organized to critically address and refine a series of the fundamental disciplinary elements comprising American urban studies. The goals of the contributors have been larger than simply shedding more analytic light on the issues surrounding the present state of regional tension in the United States. We have all attempted to supply new empirical insights within new boundaries of historical and theoretical definitions of urbanism in America. As such, this volume hopefully represents not only some measure of advancement of our knowledge about urban development but also a useful contribution to the intellectual expansion of the discipline of urban studies. The extent to which these highly ambitious goals have been achieved is directly attributable to the eight month process of interaction between the editors and the authors. Every contributor spent untold numbers of hours with the editors in a supreme effort to make this project work.
