Summary:

"America grew up on the prairies. When explorers and pioneers first ventured into Indiana's tallgrass meadows in the early 1800's, the United States was a sparsely settled nation with little power. By the time the last high plains were tamed in the 1890's this country was poised on a new era of global domination. Between these times a flood of settlers poured over this vast grassland, shaping it to their ways. In doing so they very nearly destroyed its original beauty which so deeply moved early visitors. Yet the prairies, in their physical passing away, found a permanent place in the midwest soul, spawning an artistic movement which captured the creative minds of generations. With some sixty photographs, 'An Open Land: Photographs of the Midwest 1852-1982' describes 130 years of landscape photography in the Midwest. By the time the first of these photographs were made the prairies had disappeared under the settler's plow. All that remained of the prairies to be preserved was their image. It is an image that even now survives stubbornly with all Americans. It is an image of a quintessential American landscape, an open land where movement is free and vision is unbounded." --back cover
