Summary:

A richly illustrated prestige book that presents unpublished documents and traces the history of Brussels planning in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This fascinating research is completed at the end of the book by a chapter devoted to the beginning of the twenty-first century. The authors have put forward two opposite views: on the one hand urban art practiced in the nineteenth century, and on the other hand territorial planning. which wants to be scientific, elaborated at the beginning of the 20th century. How did these two visions mark the city of Brussels? The history of planning in Brussels is full of twists and paradoxes. Between the design of different neighborhoods as they were dreamed and their true creation, there is sometimes a world of difference. The book is a fascinating retrospective of these urban planning sagas that are still going on today. The book presents numerous unpublished visual archives, sketches of plans and official documents. The reader will be confronted in this original work with the strangeness of certain important decisions and will be aware of the sometimes saving role of the time which separates the projects from their realization.
