"Mutter Teresa war vermutlich gerade in Indien, als in ihrer Geburtsstadt Skopje 1963 die Erde bebte. Mehr als tausend Menschen kamen ums Leben, die Stadt wurde fast zur Gänze zerstört. Schon kurz nach dem Erdbeben beschloss man den Wiederaufbau der Stadt nach einem Masterplan des japanischen Architekten Kenzo Tange. Skopje geriet - wie etwa Brasilia oder Chandigarh - zum Versuchslabor für den sozialutopischen Städtebau der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre.
