Summary:

Cet ouvrage est publié à l'occasion de l'exposition présentée à la Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, Paris, du 4 mai au 17 septembre 2018; Depuis deux ans, la commissaire d'exposition Tina Dassault a invité 26 architectes du monde entier à édifier, sur la plage de Deauville, des constructions de sable. Ce projet s'inscrit au sein d'une véritable tradition de l'architecture éphémère, où le sable fait office de matériau, tel que dans les sand paintings des Navajos amérindiens, les mandalas tibétains, ou encore les sand castings de Nivola et du Corbusier. Il est l'occasion pour les architectes de renouer avec les gestes immémoriaux du bâtisseur, loin de leurs bureaux et de la technologie, tout en s'inscrivant dans la perspective du développement durable - Francis Rambert l'écrit : "le sable est devenu une denrée rare". De ces constructions éphémères, qui disparaissent avec la marée, il ne reste que les photographies en noir et blanc de Michel Tréhet, devant lesquelles l'œil perd tout point de repère.
