African village / James Walton.
Pretoria, South Africa : Van Schaik, 1956.
xi, 170 pages, 58 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, maps, plans ; 29 cm
This book is based on field work and study over the past eight years but the story is far from complete. Published accounts of African cultures rarely refer to the huts or kraals and details of the vernacular architecture of the hundreds of tribes in Southern Africa are almost non-existent. The same is true of material culture in general. But architects, ethnologists and archaeologists are beginning to take more interest in African folk building and it is hoped that in a few years time detailed studies of individual tribal cultures will be available to complete the many gaps which must unavoidably occur in a work of this nature.
