En plein air--painting outdoors--traditionally describes the impressionist revolt against the studio. This book compiles texts by media scholars, scientists, artists, anthropologists and theorists exploring the concept of en plein air in terms of the digital, a realm with ever-evolving boundaries.
En plein air' - buchstäblich im Freien malen - war eine Polemik gegen die Ateliermalerei, die französische Impressionisten im 19. Jahrundert führten. Die gleiche Forderung, das Atelier zu verlassen, um im freien Feld zu beobachten, wurde von dem französischen Soziologen Marcel Mauss übernommen und als wesentliche Aufgabe der Ethnologie formuliert. Der Ethnologe sollte sich den Bedingungen des Feldes stellen und dabei einen Blick trainieren. Was würde es bedeuten, diese Methode in den digitalen Bereich zu übertragen? Das Digitale konstituiert sich weder gegenüber dem Analogen, noch bildet es einfach eine algorithmische Struktur. Seine Grenzen stehen ständig auf dem Spiel, digitale Praktiken erfinden sich immer wieder neu. Im Dialog mit dem Digitalen vereint 'En plein air' Aufsätze, die die Erfahrungen der Autoren in Interviews und Aufzeichnungen, Gedichten, Collagen, die an semi-fiktionalen und wissenschaftlichen Texten arbeiten, beschreiben.
