Invitation à l'exploration d'une oeuvre ayant façonné le paysage du Paris moderne, cet ouvrage propose un hommage critique à Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891). Ingénieur des ponts et chaussées ayant débuté sa carrière à Bordeaux, il y est remarqué par Georges-Eugène Haussmann qui, peu après sa nomination par Napoléon III comme préfet de la Seine, le place à la tête du service des Promenades et Plantations parisiennes. Féru de progrès et de rationalisme, Alphand conçoit et réalise, avec ses équipes - constituées de jardiniers-paysagistes, d'architectes et d'ingénieurs de talent -, un système d'espaces verdoyants allant des plantations d'alignement jusqu'à l'aménagement paysager des bois de Boulogne et de Vincennes, en passant par celui des squares et des parcs intérieurs. Après la disgrâce d'Haussmann et la fin du Second Empire, Alphand continue à régner sur l'ensemble des Travaux de Paris et dirige l'organisation de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, qui a légué la tour Eiffel. On lui doit également le monumental ouvrage Les Promenades de Paris, annonciateur d'une discipline nouvelle: l'urbanisme paysager.
