Summary:

The fonds documents Roger D'Astous's personal and professional activities, his architectural career and his contribution to Québec architecture. It provides information on his academic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, his apprenticeship at Frank Lloyd Wright's studio in Taliesin, Arizona and Wisconsin, and his professional practice as an architect. His architectural projects are mainly concentrated in Québec, Montréal, Montérégie, the Laurentians, Laval, as well as in the province of Ontario (including in Brockville and Kingston).

Biographical note:

Born March 3, 1926 in Montréal ; died Apr. 5, 1998 in Montréal ; son of René D'Astous and Corinne Basilières ; École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal between 1946 to 1952 ; first Quebecer architect to become apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin in 1952-1953 ; professional practice started in 1955 ; most important realisations: the church Notre-Dame-du-Bel-Amour, in Montréal (1956), Simard's residences, in Estérel (1959), church Saint-Maurice de Duvernay, in Laval (1961), Doris Lussier's residence, in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville (1962), church Notre-Dame-des-Champs, in Repentigny (1963), hotel Château Champlain, in Montréal (1964), Christian Pavillon and International Trade Centre - Expo-Club, at Expo 67 (1965-66), Olympique village of 1976 in Montréal, Yves Corbeil's residence, on L'Île Cadieux (1984), Paul Gélinas' residence, in Bromont (1985) and head office of the Institut canadien de recherches en génie forestier, in Pointe-Claire (1993) ; partner with the architects Jean-Paul Pothier and later with Luc Durand ; professor at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal from 1962 to 1965 ; recipient of the award of excellence from the Ordre des architectes du Québec in 1987, of an award from the Conseil canadien du bois in 1988 and from the Festival de l'architecture de l'IRAC in 1990.
