Published on the occasion of the exhibition presented at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, Paris, from September 16, 2020 to January 11, 2021, the work offers the opportunity to take a new look at a collection of atypical images within the visual production of the first decades of the 20th century: autochromes - the first color photography process - and films taken in Paris by operators from the Archives de la Planète. This vast and noble enterprise, imagined by Albert Kahn (1860-1940), banker, utopian and pacifist patron, pursued the ambition 'to establish a record of humanity caught in the middle of life', at a pivotal moment in its history, at the 'critical hour' of changes as profound as they are inevitable. The "Paris" fund of the Archives de la Planète fully participates in this desire to document the world through photography. With nearly 5,000 autochromes and 90,000 meters of film, it constitutes one of the most important collections of photographic and cinematographic images from the early 20th century devoted to the capital.
