Le point de départ de ce volume est l'étude des fausses montagnes construites à partir de la Renaissance. Bon nombre des plus importants jardins du 16e siècle contenaient des monticules artificiels, symbolisant, presque toujours, le Parnasse. La fête, l'art des jardins, la peinture et l'art de la table se plaisaient dans la reproduction et variation de cette forme particulière, reprise par la suite aussi bien dans le cadre des festivités baroques (montagnes éphémères) que lors de la Grande Révolution (la montagne de l'Être Suprême). La montagne érigée par l'homme prendra également la forme de faux volcans, pyramides et autre sommités symboliques.
