Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) war nicht nur als Architekt und Restaurator tätig, sondern er hinterliess auch ein reiches kunsttheoretisches Werk, das ebenso wie seine architektonischen Lösungen bereits auf die Zeitgenossen grossen Einfluss ausüben sollte.
