The several studies on french grands ensembles make reference to heterogeneous disciplines, to different generations. The reports and essays that since last postwar have followed the physical, social, cultural, political life of grands ensembles show the existence of manyfold discourses by which these bi objects have been built, read, destroyed, re-imagined. According to the aim of visualising the potential condition of grands ensembles it was necessary to follow a dynamic interpretative path on the subject starting from the different intentions that have been constructing these ensembles phisically and textually. In a foucaultian meaning of discourse Eco proposed a rhythmic shape of the interpretative tool that we think can help urban researchers in a wide sense. Adopting the triadic, circular rhythm that semiotically links three different intentions among authors, readers, oeuvres, seems a pertinent way to approach urban figures with many histories. However this approach soon began inadequate even if necessary : a too semiotical glance would have turned away the attention on the historicity of these figures. At this point, thanks to a hermeneutic recentering of the thesis, the study of Ricoeur's works on interpretation revealed its importance if we consider contemporary urban spaces not as a tabula rasa to reinvent but as the place where heterogeneous objects live together.
