Summary:

Marion Dorn (1896-1964) was undoubtedly one of the most successful designers of this century. The designer of the rug in Syrie Maugham's famous 'White Room', she is also known by enthusiasts of 1930s' interiors for her other rugs, produced for architects such as Serge Chermayeff and Oliver Hill. But she was also prolific and inventive; from about 1922 to 1962 she designed batiks, block- and screen-printed fabrics, woven fabrics, London Underground upholstery cloths, wallpapers, graphics, illustrations, furniture and complete interiors; over one hundred rugs were designed for Wilton Royal in the decade before the War and another hundred or so for Edward Fields, New York, after it. Her first major commission, in the early 1930s, was for the Savoy Hotel Group in London, and her last, in 1960, was for the White House in Washington D.C.
