Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale les bombardements aériens brisent la fragile illusion de sûreté des villes d'art, de leurs monuments et de leurs musées. Avec son apport fondamental à la documentation des dommages au tissu artistique et urbain, la photographie historique dédiée au patrimoine lors du conflit est aujourd'hui une source privilégiée, mais encore peu connue, pour l'analyse du débat sur la conservation et la protection. De la cathédrale de Reims aux églises de Venise, en effet, la perception de la valeur du patrimoine artistique et la conscience de ses blessures devient une question populaire et internationale grâce, surtout, à la photographie qui fut le moyen privilégié d'une nouvelle communication - plus directe et immédiate - des valeurs de l'art contre la barbarie de la guerre.
