The set comprises about 150 double-faced cardboard façade pieces, with separate flexible metal parts to hold them together in a tab-and-slot assembly system. The printed designs represent several styles of architecture including the Gothic and neo-classical, and the set allows a "little builder" to assemble a number of specific structures, among them a church and a castle. Toys of this kind have their origins in the form of playing cards, which became popular in Europe in the 15th century. Throughout their development during the following centuries into a wide variety of educational and amusing card games, playing cards were often used to build simple and not very stable houses of cards. By the middle of the 19th century cards were being printed with architectural features and issued with either notches or clips to permit them to be made into stable structures. 'School for little builders' is an extension of such sets, with many of its pieces cut in the shape of arches, pediments and roof pieces. The past decade has seen a renaissance in the design and production of paper toys, and the child's urge to build can find expression in a variety of cut-and-assemble models and other paper construction sets
