Brightly-painted, carved wooden toys were being made in the forest regions of Germany and exported at least as early as the 17th century. Primitive in design and typical of the toy villages and other toys produced in Germany throughout the 19th century, the village here described and myriad other wooden toys were mass-produced in small workshops in Nuremberg, in the Gröden valley in the South Tyrol, and in the Erzgebirge in Saxony, and sold in great numbers throughout Europe and North America. Even after German folk art had evolved into an immense industry, and in spite of the eventual introduction of machinery into the process, the traditions of craftsmanship established in Germany in earlier times were retained, and German toys continued to be regarded as appealing, sturdy and colourful. (Cf. A. Fraser. A history of toys. London, 1972).
