A general survey of French society in 1886. Ch. 5 (pp. 161-181), "Les Juifs", focuses on French antisemitism. Catholics blamed Jews and freemasons for the French Revolution, while socialists denounced capitalism and cosmopolitan materialism personified by Jews. Edouard Drumont combined socialist and Catholic antisemitism in a new, racist anti-Judaism, setting up the Jew as a negative symbol in opposition to which French society could define itself. He stressed their Semitic character which prevents assimilation, and described them as cosmopolitan, parasitical, and treacherous. Drumont's works led to a revival of antisemitism in France. His disciple, the Marquis de Mores, sought to unite trade-unions and antisemites in a national-socialist revolution against Jews. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
