The book reviews the history of modern Brazilian architecture and is also an analysis of the Novo Estado society when the government implemented in the 1930's a series measures designed at transforming the image of the country through its architecture, a concrete, visible and large scale representation of the socialist values they wanted to promote. Author Cavalcanti studies the clashing trends in the formation of the modernist Brazilian architecture represented by Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and other noted architects who would eventually prevail over the neo-classicism and academic designs.
