Woodcuts: architectural title page featuring a white-on-black arabesque border incorporating portrait medallion of Caporali and his arms; symbols of the four arts in each corner: Mathematica, Musica, Litteratura, Pittura, with the seated figure of Architettura in the upper center, flanked by the crowned griffins of Perugia; portrait of Bigazzini in armour, on leaf [2]; extensively illustrated throughout with 81 woodcut architectural drawings and diagrams (based on the illustrations in the 1521 edition of Vitruvius printed in Como by Gottardo da Ponte), including two versions of the Vitruvian man on rectos of leaves 70 and 71; ornamental and pictorial initials.
Text of Vitruvius in large roman type, surrounded on two or three sides by Caporali's commentary in smaller roman type; marginal notes in small roman.

Summary:

First and only edition of Caporali's Italian translation of the first five books of Vitruvius. Based on the 1521 Como edition, the work was printed at Bigazzini's private press in Perugia with the collaboration of Caporali, himself an architect and painter; Vittorio Muzio, the typesetter; and Jean de Né, the typographer; see F. Ascarelli, La tipografia del '500 in Italia (Firenze: Leo S. Olschki Editore, 1989), pages 308-309.
