The role played by Lucio Costa in the development of modern architecturein Brazil exceeds his own architectural practice. Through a series of public statements, Costa established the theoretical basis for the so-called Brazilian modern architecture, i. e., a modern architecture that was also legitimatelyBrazilian. This dissertation focus on the texts produced by Costa between 1924 and 1951 and tries to identify not only the main characteristics of this architecture, but also the questions upon which, according to its idealizer, depended its success.
