Notes:
Fifty-seven years ago, the author of "Passion of a Life" set out to discover architecture for himself: from Finland and Alvar Aalto to Chicago and Mies van der Rohe, followed by the classical temples and tea-houses of Japan, the stone walls of Inisheer and the works of innumerous great architects of our time, he toured the world, armed with a Rollei camera, documenting what was essential to him. The 32 double-page reproductions of the book, taken from his archives and hitherto for the most part unpublished, illustrate some of the most momentous experiences of this long period, which was dedicated to the art of building on all levels, from the most elemental anonymous examples up to the great masters of our time. The discovery of timeless basic structures, used in the most different contexts -- the quest for calm and simplicity, bound to a valid order of things -- and architecture experienced as an essential way of life, are shown as a path towards self-assurance and genuine creativeness. But the main purpose in writing "Passion of a Life" has been, for me, to trace back and decipher the history of my own identity.
