The author analyzes the incorporation of the Arab world into the networks of the global tourist economy in terms of the creation of local tourist spaces and economic and political development. He argues that tourism development has allowed Arab states to promote integration into the global economy while simultaneously expanding their control of their domestic economies and societies. He also explores the role of tourism in international politics, arguing, for example, that it has been a significant factor in the peace process between Israel and Jordan.
