Summary:

This is a catalogue of an exhibition of Thomson's photos prepared by the British Council for display in China and the Far East in 1991. Some of the prints had been previously published in the 19th century, while others appeared in this exhibition for the first time. None had previously been displayed in China. Thomson's four-volume Illustrations of China and its People, from 1873-4 had been printed by the collotype process, while his Through China with a Camera (1898) had used the cheaper half-tone process. The images in this exhibition and in the catalog are of considerably higher quality, printed from copy negatives of the original glass-plate negatives. The images have not been cropped or doctored, so all original scratches, etc. are present.
