Biographical note:

This type of game, known as 'jeu de l'oie' in French, was first developed in Italy in the late 16th century and may have been based on ancient Greek or Egyptian games of a similar nature. Traditionally the game is played on a board containing 63 illustrated squares layed out in a spiral.
