Until the last of her long life Mary Clarkson Duyvendak-Allen remained a stimulating friend. Architecture was a long-standing interest with her, not restrained to reading and talking about the subject. On more than one occasion she played a remarkably active role in the conservation of a monument. Such was the case when, as the young, beautiful wife of an American officer in the occupation army at Coblenz, she used her influence to save the fortress Ehrenbreitstein from demolition. When she recalled the story more than sixty years later, she added: "the French were furious, when all the high American officers received the Legion d'Honneur Bagby (her then husband) was passed over". I wish to dedicate this book to her memory. -- from the acknowledgements page.
