Summary:

From Pigalle to Preault is the first comprehensive study of sculpture produced in France between 1760 and 1840. Examining the momentous changes in form and meaning that occurred in this genre during this period, Alison West situates these developments within the context of the social upheavals leading to and following the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. She traces important developments, such as the rise and fall of the neoclassical style, as well as establishes new topics such as "neo-Goujonism" while applying new methodologies to the study of this subject. Richly illustrated with over 300 halftones and 8 color plates, this work makes accessible an important body of sculpture that has been neglected in the literature of art history.
