Summary:

"The first coloured issue ... Thouin categorizes four types of garden - 'potagers,' 'vergers' or fruit gardens, 'jardins de botanique' (i.e. for plants used in pharmacy or medicine) and 'jardins d'agrément' or pleasure gardens; these are further subdivided into the symmetrical, the Chinese, English, or 'irregular' and the 'paysagiste' or natural garden. Designs for appropriate 'fabriques' (garden buildings), plants or landscape features are drawn around the main plan with numbered key to their positioning. Four plates are devoted to ideas for ornamental 'fabriques,' these drawn to scale or with ground plans. Among the schemes are a project for enlarging the 'Jardin des Plantes' in Paris, a public garden in the 'Champs Elisées,' a 'Jardin pharmaceutique' with plants arranged according to the method of Tournefort and an interesting idea for an experimental colonial farm in the tropics, largely devised by the author's brother André. Two fine plates illustrate this project which is laid out over different types of terrain; the text describes how maximum economic use can be extracted from the land by planting coffee, sugar, cocoa, vanilla, clove, cinnamon and forests of precious woods; the breeding of goats for their 'cashmere' wool is also suggested. The work is dedicated to André Thouin, and the publisher's preface cites the latter's 'Cours de Culture' as a complementary work of excellence."--Hünersdorff Rare Books description.
