Robert Murase : stone and water / text by Michael Leccese.
Washington, DC : Spacemaker Press, ©1997.
63 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 27 cm.

This book features four of Murase's projects, and presents five others that fall into the category of what he calls "crafted" landscapes, made almost exclusively from two elements: stone and water. Several of these works bear the influence of Japan's Muromachi period, which produced many of Kyoto's great temple gardens, including Ryoan-ji. Yet they are also the products of Murase's sometimes underrated ability to appropriate landscape elements from other places and times. Finally, an elemental strenght shines through: his intuitive ability, developed through years of study and of building things by hand, for arranging stone and water in ways that creat spaces which seem more sacred than secular.
