The man who made Paris Paris : the illustrated biography of Georges-Eugene Haussmann / Willet Weeks ; photographer of scenes of Paris today, Jean-Claude Martin.
London : London House, 1999.
160 pages : illustrations ; 26 cm
There are many fine buildings in Paris, designed by excellent architects; but the man who did most to create the city's special character was a civil servant who deliberately destroyed much of 19th century Paris.
Having experienced the claustrophobic, disease-ridden old city as an asthmatic child, George-Eugene Haussmann was appointed Prefect of Paris by Emperor Napoleon III and charged with doing what was necessary to make the city more attractive. He used this authority to the full, demolishing whole streets and interesting architecture. The result, though not appreciated by his fellow Frenchmen at the time, was to create the delightful boulevards, open spaces and perspectives that give the French capital its present unique flavor.
This well-researched biography, illustrated with archival and modern photographs, demonstrates Haussmann's importance in the history of the city.
