Summary:

"The Argentinian architect Clorindo Testa (1923) earned a worldwide reputation with his designs for the Banco de Londres y America del Sud (1960-66) and the Biblioteca Nacional (1961-95), both in Buenos Aires. These powerful urban megastructures of rough concrete reveal the influence of Le Corbusier. At the same time they propose a dialectical synthesis of public and private space that places Testa on a par with the Japanese Metabolists and other futuristic movements of the early sixties." "After this epic period, which lasted until the late seventies, Testa's architecture acquired a more intimate, contemplative and introverted scale and character. From the early eighties, his buildings address the spirit of a place, developing a strongly poetic and profoundly human dimension. Rather than flaunting new technologies, they integrate attributes of traditional architecture in a thoroughly contemporary design. Among the most beautiful buildings completed during this period is the architect's own beach house Capotesta (1983) in Pinamar. Architecture historian Manuel Cuadra portrays the architect and his architecture. This monograph documents sixteen major projects in detail, built between the 1960s until the present day, richly illustrated with photographs by Hans-Jurgen Commerell. Book jacket."--BOOK JACKET.
